7.4-magnitude earthquake hits southern Philippines, tsunami warning issued, then canceled
A powerful earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of Davao Oriental province in the southern Philippines on Friday morning, triggering a tsunami warning for coastal areas.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) confirmed the event and called on people to immediately evacuate to higher ground.
The epicenter of the earthquake was recorded in the Pacific Ocean, about 62 kilometers southeast of the city of Manai, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Immediately after the event, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) issued warnings for the Philippines, Indonesia, and Palau, predicting waves of up to 3 meters along the Philippine coast and 1 meter in parts of Indonesia.
