US President Donald Trump has expressed anger over South Korea’s refusal to participate in a war against Iran and said Washington should not help countries that are unwilling to cooperate in times of need.
Trump said in an interview with Fox News that he had asked Seoul to cooperate with the United States on the Iran issue, but South Korean officials opposed the request, adding that he would “remember this position.”
Referring to the presence of approximately 40,000 American troops in South Korea, the US President emphasized Washington’s assistance to the country and said that when a country is not willing to provide reciprocal assistance, the US should not provide unconditional assistance.
Trump had previously criticized Seoul’s lack of support in the war against Iran and at the same time ordered a reduction in US participation in joint exercises with South Korea.
These statements come at a time when the US military presence in South Korea is considered one of the main pillars of the two countries’ security alliance, and any revision of these commitments could affect the security equations in East Asia.
