Australia pledges $43.8 million to investigate war crimes in Afghanistan

The Australian federal government has allocated $43.8 million in the 2026/27 budget to the Office of the Special Investigator, an institution responsible for investigating possible war crimes by Australian forces in Afghanistan.

Australian media reported that the investigation concerns the performance of Australian Defense Forces in Afghanistan between 2005 and 2016.

Investigators are reportedly investigating allegations of serious misconduct and violations of the laws of war.

It has been stated that if sufficient evidence is available, the cases will be referred to the relevant institutions for legal prosecution.
