Niger army officers’ coup attempt fails

An attempt by a number of young officers to stage a coup in Niamey, the capital of Niger, was foiled by the intervention of the country’s army and presidential guard.

The clashes began at the 101st Air Force Base near Niamey International Airport, and the rebels were planning to storm the presidential palace by shooting at sensitive locations and attempting to arrest a number of soldiers.

Niger’s state television reported that the clashes continued for several hours, and that security forces eventually took control of the situation and arrested dozens of people. Niger’s defense minister also credited the rapid response of his country’s defense and security forces with preventing the spread of these movements.
