Massive influx of illegal immigrants from Morocco into Ceuta prompts Spain to refuse to declare national emergency
Local authorities in the autonomous city of Ceuta in North Africa have declared a local state of emergency after a large influx of illegal immigrants from Morocco. Reports indicate that hundreds of migrants have entered the Spanish-ruled territory by land and sea.
According to reports, a number of migrants have also entered residential areas; local authorities have asked the Spanish central government to declare a national state of emergency, but the government of Pedro Sánchez has rejected this request.
The Spanish Interior Ministry has announced that border protection will continue, but the arrival of migrants alone is not a legal basis for declaring a national emergency. The ministry added that the situation will continue to be managed using police forces and legal mechanisms, and that there are currently no plans to deploy the army or allocate special emergency resources to Ceuta.
