The number of prisoners in France has exceeded 90,000 for the first time
Statistics from the French Ministry of Justice show that the number of prisoners in the country has exceeded 90,000 for the first time, reaching an unprecedented figure.
According to the latest statistics, as of September 1, 2026, a total of 90,020 prisoners are held in French prisons.
This figure was recorded while the official capacity of French prisons is stated to be around 63,300 people, and the number of prisoners significantly exceeds the available capacity.
