World Bank warns that continued war in the Middle East will put millions at risk of starvation

The World Bank’s chief economist has warned that millions more people around the world will face the risk of hunger if tensions and war continue in the Middle East.

In an interview with AFP, Indermat Gill said that currently about 300 million people in the world suffer from severe food insecurity and this figure may soon increase to 20 percent.

He emphasized that the greatest damage will be inflicted on countries that are engaged in war or have fragile governments, and the hunger crisis in these countries will be greatly exacerbated.

Gill added that the food available on the market is from past production, but the true impacts of the crisis will become apparent in the coming months, when disruptions caused by the war affect food supply chains and production.
