5.9 magnitude earthquake shakes eastern Japan, 37 injured

A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck parts of eastern Japan, including Tokyo, on Saturday morning, injuring at least 37 people in five provinces, most of them with superficial injuries.

The epicenter of the earthquake was reported to be in southern Ibaraki Prefecture at a depth of about 70 kilometers; the event disrupted some train services and broke a water pipe in Tokyo.

Japanese authorities have announced that there is no tsunami threat and that no unusual events have been reported at nuclear facilities so far; authorities have also warned of the possibility of aftershocks in the coming days.
