WHO stresses importance of vaccines as World Immunization Week begins

As World Immunization Week 2026 begins on April 24, the World Health Organization (WHO) has emphasized the vital role of vaccines in preventing diseases and saving lives, and has urged families to pay serious attention to vaccinating their children.

The organization said in a statement that vaccines are one of the most important public health tools and have saved the lives of more than 150 million people in the past 50 years.

According to the WHO, this achievement was the result of families deciding to protect themselves against diseases such as measles, diphtheria, pertussis, polio and rotavirus.

It also added that new vaccines against diseases such as malaria, human papillomavirus, cholera, dengue meningitis, respiratory syncytial virus, Ebola and M-Pax are also saving lives.

The announcement states that World Immunization Week, with the slogan “Vaccines are effective for every generation,” emphasizes the role of vaccines in protecting communities against diseases across generations.

The World Health Organization has urged countries to strengthen immunization programs and prioritize universal access to essential vaccines.
