Iran’s UN envoy: The international community is not fulfilling even its basic obligations towards Afghan refugees
Amir Saeed Iravani, Iran’s permanent representative to the United Nations, strongly criticized the international community, saying that it is not fulfilling even its basic obligations to support millions of Afghan refugees.
According to Iranian media reports, Irvani, referring to the significant decrease in international aid, announced that the approved budget for Afghan refugees in 2026 has decreased by more than 60 percent compared to previous years.
He emphasized that Iran cannot shoulder the heavy burden of hosting about six million Afghan citizens alone; this situation violates the principle of international responsibility sharing, and the international community must fulfill its obligations.
The Iranian representative also rejected recent statements by former US envoy for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad, saying that Iran only returns people without legal documents to Afghanistan, and that this action is in accordance with international law.
