6.1 magnitude earthquake hits Türkiye’s Balikesir, causing damage

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake shook the western Turkish province of Balikesir on Sunday 10th of August.

According to the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Organization (AFAD), the earthquake occurred in the Aegean Sea, 49 kilometers from the center of Balikesir province, at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The earthquake was so strong that it was also felt in the cities of Istanbul, Bursa, Yalova, and Eskişehir.

According to reports, the earthquake has so far caused the collapse of more than 10 buildings in the region and injured 24 people.

In the city of Sindirgi, the epicenter of the earthquake, a building collapsed and five people were trapped, all of whom were rescued.

The AFD organization announced that 20 aftershocks were also recorded after the main earthquake.

Published images of the damage show the destruction of some structures and the panic of people on the streets.

There have been no reports of casualties so far, but local authorities have announced the closure of schools in the area.
