Afghan migrants returning from Pakistan and Iran increase dramatically

The International Organization for Migration announced that the number of Afghan returnees from Pakistan in the first quarter of 2026 was fifteen times higher than the same period in 2025.

The organization added in its new report that the number of Afghan returnees from Pakistan has increased from 2,300 to more than 42,000 in the past two weeks alone.

The report emphasized that this significant increase occurred after the reopening of the Torkham and Spin Boldak ports for the return of migrants.

At the same time, the return of migrants from Iran has also increased by 56 percent, although the overall figure is still 30 percent lower than last year.

Most of the returns from Iran were recorded through the ports of Pol-e Abrisham (Milak) and Islam Qala, with Pol-e Abrisham ports increasing by 81 percent and Islam Qala by 43 percent.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said the situation of Afghan refugees in Pakistan was deteriorating day by day after tensions between Kabul and Islamabad escalated.

On the other hand, the joint attacks by the US and Israel on Iran have also affected the situation of Afghan refugees in the country, and more than 20 Afghan refugees have been martyred in these attacks.
