US President Donald Trump threatened to impose heavy tariffs on France on Monday in response to statements attributed to Emmanuel Macron that France would not join the international peace delegation to resolve the Gaza conflict.
Speaking to reporters after attending the college football national championship game in Miami, Florida, Trump said in response to a question about Macron’s position: “Did he say that? Well, nobody wants him because he’s going to be out of office very soon.”
He further added in a threatening tone that if France continues to oppose the US proposals regarding Gaza, Washington will impose heavy trade tariffs on French goods.
Macron had previously emphasized that France would participate in such mechanisms only within the framework of broadly agreed international initiatives and while maintaining its decision-making independence.
So far, the Elysee Palace has not responded officially to Trump’s threats.
