Afghanistan’s active participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization is possible and practical
Gul Hassan Hassan, Afghanistan’s ambassador to Moscow, announced in an interview with the Russian state news agency (TASS) that Afghanistan is ready to send its representative to future meetings of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and once again play an active role in the organization’s activities.
The Afghan ambassador emphasized that as a result of the continuous efforts of Moscow and Beijing, most member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization have concluded that Afghanistan’s active participation is once again possible and practical.
Afghanistan was previously an observer member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, but its membership and presence in the organization has been suspended or terminated for the past four years.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) was founded in 2001 and its main members include Russia, China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Pakistan, Iran, and Uzbekistan; Belarus also joined the organization in July 2024.
Afghanistan and Mongolia are observer countries, and a number of other countries, such as Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, are dialogue partners.
