Russia and China reject draft resolution in Security Council, trigger mechanism activated

The United Nations Security Council rejected a draft resolution proposed by Russia and China to postpone sanctions on Iran for six months.

In the vote on Friday, September 26, 2025, four votes were recorded (China, Russia, Pakistan and Algeria), nine against, including the United States, Britain, France and Germany, and two abstentions (Guyana) and South Korea.

The draft, which was presented as a last-minute attempt to prevent the activation of the UN sanctions snapback mechanism against Iran’s nuclear program, was not approved due to the lack of at least nine votes in favor.

With the rejection of the draft, the trigger mechanism will officially be activated on Sunday (28) September 2025 at 8pm local time (3:30am) (Monday) and all previous UN sanctions against Iran, including the arms embargo, asset freeze and missile restrictions, will be reinstated.
