Guterres visits Kazakhstan to sign agreement to establish regional center for sustainable development
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will travel to Kazakhstan on Sunday to attend the signing ceremony of an agreement to establish the organization’s new regional center for the Sustainable Development Goals.
The center, which will cover Central Asia and Afghanistan, will work to coordinate actions in the areas of economic, social, and environmental development.
Farhan Haq, deputy spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, announced on Friday that the agreement had previously been approved by the UN General Assembly and would be signed in the presence of Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
The main signatories of the document will be Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Kazakhstan Murat Nurtullo and UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Li Junhua.
According to the Astana Times, this initiative reflects Kazakhstan’s growing role in strengthening regional dialogue and creating sustainable policy frameworks in Central Asia and Afghanistan.
