Security Council extends UNAMA mission in Afghanistan for another year
The United Nations Security Council has extended the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) for another year.
In a Security Council meeting held to review the future of the UNAMA mission, all 15 members of the Council voted in favor of extending the organization’s activities in Afghanistan for one year.
According to reports, a resolution to extend the UNAMA mission was proposed by China to the United Nations Security Council.
The Security Council had previously, on February 25, 2020, temporarily extended the UNAMA mission for three months until June 17, 2026.
In previous years, the UNAMA mission was usually extended for one year, but this year, due to some disagreements, it was initially extended for only three months.
UNAMA operates as the United Nations political mission in Afghanistan in various sectors, including coordinating international assistance, supporting political and development processes, and reporting to the United Nations.
