Anti-immigration unrest in Belfast, Ireland, escalates after knife attack
After a man was stabbed in Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland, a wave of anti-immigration protests and street clashes erupted in the city and other parts of Britain.
Police have announced that a 30-year-old Sudanese man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder, carrying a knife, and making threats to kill following the incident.
According to reports, the victim of the attack is a man in his 40s who suffered severe injuries to his face and eyes and is receiving treatment.
Following the release of images of the attack, hundreds of protesters gathered in Belfast, setting a number of cars on fire, buildings and a bus, and clashes between protesters and police forces were also reported.
Northern Ireland Prime Minister Michelle O’Neill condemned the violence, calling the attacks on homes and the eviction of families “despicable cowardice.”
Police have emphasized that there is no indication of a terrorist motive in this case so far and that the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
