Bulgarian Prime Minister Resigns After Mass Protests

Bulgarian Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov resigned yesterday after weeks of nationwide protests against the government’s budget bill.

The Bulgarian government’s 2025 budget bill included significant tax increases, higher pension contributions for salaried workers, and more extensive borrowing to cover the budget deficit, which was met with strong reactions from labor unions, chambers of commerce, and a large part of civil society.

Protests began two weeks ago in Sofia and other major cities and have led to general strikes and the blocking of major roads in recent days.

“I have decided to step down to prevent further instability and return peace to the country,” Denkov said in his resignation speech.

The Bulgarian president must now introduce an interim government within a week to pave the way for early elections.
