World Health Organization Attack on Al-Dhain Teaching Hospital in Darfur, Sudan, 64 killed, 89 injured

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced that at least 64 people were killed and 89 others injured in an airstrike on Friday evening on the Al-Dhain Teaching Hospital in the city of Al-Dhain, the capital of East Darfur state, Sudan.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, emphasized in his message on social media that among the victims of several patients were two female nurses and a male doctor.

He added that 89 people were injured, including eight health workers, and that the attack completely destroyed the hospital’s obstetrics and gynecology departments and emergency department, preventing the center from operating. Basic health services in the city have been disrupted.

Tedros announced that with this incident, the total number of victims of attacks on health facilities during the nearly three-year war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia has reached more than 2,000.

According to him, the World Health Organization has so far recorded the deaths of 2,036 people in 213 attacks on health facilities, and once again called for an immediate reduction in violence and the protection of civilians, health workers, and aid workers.

It is not yet clear whether the attack was carried out by the Sudanese army or RSF forces.
