Kim Jong-un elected General Secretary for another 15 years at 9th Workers’ Party Congress
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was re-elected as General Secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea at the 9th Congress of the country’s Workers’ Party, thus continuing his 15-year rule over the country’s sole ruling party.
Kim announced at the congress that the Workers’ Party in the new era will focus on strengthening the economy, raising citizens’ living standards, and improving people’s living conditions.
International media reported that during this congress, which is considered North Korea’s largest political gathering, members of the party’s Central Committee were also elected and some of the party’s laws and statutes were reviewed and changed.
Kim Jong-un has led North Korea and the Workers’ Party since the death of his father, Kim Jong-il, in December 2011.
