Former South Korean president sentenced to life in prison
A court in South Korea has sentenced former President Yoon Suk-yeol to life in prison for declaring martial law in December 2024.
The verdict came after a lengthy trial in which Yoon Suk-yeol was found guilty of treason, an attempted coup and a serious violation of democratic principles.
Yoon Seok-yeol, who was removed from power in 2024 during a political crisis and widespread public protests, had previously been wanted on charges of corruption and abuse of power, but his life sentence was issued mainly because of the martial law case.
This heavy conviction is one of the rarest sentences against former presidents in South Korean democratic history and demonstrates the seriousness of the country’s judicial system in dealing with constitutional violations.
