Germany to evacuate 535 Afghans with resettlement obligations from Pakistan
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrint said the government wants to transfer about 535 Afghans who are officially committed to resettlement in Germany and are stranded in Pakistan to Germany by the end of December.
These Afghans include those who have collaborated with German forces or are at risk due to their human rights activities, such as journalism and the like.
The German government is in contact with Pakistani authorities to speed up the process, as Pakistan has set a deadline of the end of the year to resolve the situation of these people, otherwise they may be deported to Afghanistan.
However, the new German government under Friedrich Mertz has limited some resettlement programs and canceled admissions for another group (about 650 people).
The decision has been criticized by human rights organizations, which are calling for the transfer of all people at risk before the end of the year.
