An American official confirmed to Reuters that an accident had occurred with one of the US military’s autonomous underwater vehicles in the Middle East, claiming that the vehicle had malfunctioned due to a technical defect.
These statements come at a time when the Revolutionary Guard Navy had previously announced the capture of an American smart submarine in the Strait of Hormuz.
In an interview with Al Jazeera, a CENTCOM spokesman confirmed the loss of one of the American submersibles in the waters of the region, but claimed that the vessel suffered a technical failure while carrying out the mission and was disabled.
The Dive-LD autonomous submersible is manufactured by the American company Anduril Industries. The first prototype of this system was delivered to the U.S. Navy’s Unmanned Subsurface Systems Battalion in 2025.
The system is about 5.8 meters long and weighs nearly three tons, and is designed to independently carry out long-duration missions in deep waters.
The IRGC Navy has announced that the vessel was recently captured in the Strait of Hormuz.
