Emmanuel Macron re-appoints Sébastien Le Corneaux as French Prime Minister

French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday reappointed Sébastien Le Corneaux, who resigned last Monday (October 6) as the shortest-serving prime minister in modern French history.

The move came as Macron called on Le Corneaux to try to form a government and pass the 2026 budget in a divided parliament.

Le Corneaux, who resigned just hours after introducing his new cabinet, cited the lack of sufficient authority in selecting ministers as the reason for his resignation.

This cabinet immediately faced strong opposition from left and right coalitions, and opposition parties threatened to overthrow the government.

Macron announced the appointment in a brief statement from the Elysee Palace, stressing that the aim was to end France’s deep political deadlock.

In response to the appointment, Le Corneaux said: “I accept this responsibility out of duty,” adding that the political crisis that has exhausted the French people must be ended.
