Attempted assassination of Ecuadorian president, shot and surrounded by 500 protesters

Ecuador’s Minister of Environment and Energy, Ines Manzano, announced on Tuesday (October 7, 2025) an attempt to assassinate the country’s President, Daniel Nobua.

The incident occurred during widespread protests against the government’s economic policies and targeted the vehicle carrying Nobua.

According to Reuters and Aftab News, about 500 protesters surrounded the president’s motorcade in downtown Quito, pelting it with rocks and shooting.

Bullet holes were observed on the body of the car, and security forces intervened to protect Nobua.

The incident occurred as Ecuador faces a wave of labor and indigenous protests against rising fuel prices and the government’s austerity policies.

The incident has highlighted the fragile stability of South America and heated up the debate over the security of political leaders in the region.
