US immigration officer shoots man in New York in front of five-year-old child, sparks strong reaction from city’s mayor
A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot and wounded 28-year-old Oscar Belgal in the neck in Marble Hill, New York, on Thursday. A five-year-old child was in the back seat of the car at the time of the incident, but was not injured.
According to the US Department of Homeland Security, ICE agents approached Belgal’s car while attempting to arrest him, who the department said had a criminal record, and a shooting occurred during the operation; the department has not provided an explanation for the shooting or whether the agents were aware of the child in the car.
In response to the incident, New York Mayor Zahran Mamdani accused the Donald Trump administration of creating a climate of fear and panic and called for an end to the immigration enforcement operations in the city. He called the shooting “unjustifiable” and described it as a “scandal.”
Mamdani also said that in conversations with Trump and the Secretary of Homeland Security, the United States demanded Belgal’s release; however, according to the published report, ICE agents took the injured man away after transferring him to the hospital.
