NATO reassures Russia ahead of nuclear drills in Italy
Following rising tensions between Russia and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the military alliance is trying to ease Moscow’s concerns about an upcoming nuclear exercise in Italy.
The news and analysis website Politico reported that NATO wants to reassure Russia that these exercises do not pose a threat to the country.
Nassima Burrows, NATO’s director of nuclear policy, said that the alliance holds such exercises every year and that she believes there is no reason for Russia and other countries to be concerned.
The annual “Roz” exercise is scheduled to be held in Italy from October 13 to 23; the aim of this exercise is to maintain the readiness of nuclear forces and practice procedures related to NATO’s deterrence and defense.
