24th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks: Commemoration amid political tensions
Thursday, September 11, 2025, marks the 24th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States; an event in which several passenger planes were hijacked by the Al-Qaeda group led by Osama bin Laden and crashed into the World Trade Center towers in New York, the Pentagon in Washington, and a farm in Pennsylvania, killing nearly 3,000 people.
Two weeks after the disaster, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) blamed Al Qaeda for the attack.
These attacks, which changed the world forever, led to the start of the American war in Afghanistan and the collapse of the Islamic Emirate government at that time.
After nearly two decades of presence of American and allied forces in Afghanistan, the complete withdrawal of these forces in 2021 led to the fall of the Western-backed government (the Republic) and the Islamic Emirate returned to power once again.
