Statement by 14 members of the Security Council calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities in Gaza

On Wednesday, August 27, 2025, the fourteen members of the United Nations Security Council, excluding the United States, issued a joint statement calling for an immediate, permanent and unconditional ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

These countries also called on the Israeli regime to cancel its decision to expand military operations in the Gaza Strip.

In the statement, read by the representatives of Guyana and Slovenia, Algeria, China, Denmark, France, Greece, Guyana, Pakistan, Panama, South Korea, Russia, Sierra Leone, Slovenia, Somalia and the United Kingdom stressed the need for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages held by Hamas and other groups, a significant increase in humanitarian aid throughout Gaza, and the lifting of all restrictions imposed on the delivery of aid.

The statement came as the UN Famine Monitoring Committee confirmed on Friday that famine had begun in the northern Gaza Strip and was expected to spread to the Deir al-Balah and Khan Yunis areas by the end of September.
