Pakistan’s Supreme Court orders Imran Khan’s release in May 9 riots case
According to Pakistani media reports, the Supreme Court of Pakistan on Thursday approved the bail application of former Prime Minister Imran Khan in the May 9, 2023 riots case and ordered his release from prison.
The decision was made by a three-member panel headed by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, who reviewed petitions related to eight cases related to the riots.
However, despite this ruling, Imran Khan will still remain in prison due to his conviction in the “Al-Qadir” corruption case.
In January 2023 the Accountability Court of Pakistan sentenced Imran Khan to 14 years in prison and his wife Bushra Begum to 7 years.
The case is related to allegations of illegal receipt of £190 million for the benefit of a wealthy businessman during Khan’s prime ministership.
Imran Khan and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) have described all the charges against him as political and aimed at suppressing the opposition, claiming that the cases are part of the government and military’s efforts to prevent his return to power.
