Deadly outbreak in Sudan’s Darfur kills 305, infects over 7,000
The Coordinator for Displaced Persons and Refugees in the Darfur region of Sudan announced a health disaster.
According to reports, the disease, which has intensified due to poor sanitation and a lack of clean drinking water in the war-torn areas of the region, has so far claimed the lives of 305 people and infected 7,011 others.
The official said that ongoing clashes between Sudanese army forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia group since April 2023 have severely disrupted health infrastructure and access to safe water.
IDP camps, especially in areas such as Tawilah in North Darfur, face severe shortages of water and sanitation facilities, which has facilitated the rapid spread of the disease.
Aid organizations such as Doctors Without Borders (MSF) and UNICEF have warned that without immediate access to humanitarian aid, including clean water, vaccines, and medical services, the crisis could become wider.
Seasonal rainfall and the destruction of sewage systems have also worsened the situation.
