Gholamhossein Darzi, Iran’s ambassador and chargé d’affaires to the United Nations, has condemned the US threats to use the “mother of all bombs” against Iran in a letter to the organization’s Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council, and called for immediate action to prevent the escalation of tensions.
The letter refers to American media reports about examining military options, including the possible use of the MOAB bomb. The letter also mentions statements by the Israeli Minister of Defense about targeting Iranian energy facilities.
Iran has warned that the threat of an attack against critical civilian infrastructure could have serious humanitarian and environmental consequences and would be in conflict with international humanitarian law.
Darzi has called on the Security Council to condemn military threats against Iran, hold an emergency meeting if necessary, and take steps to hold the responsible parties accountable and compensate for the damages.
In its thesis, Iran emphasized its right to self-defense under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter and warned that any further aggression could lead to an uncontrollable escalation of tensions.
