First images of Shelekhov released in Siberia, concerns about the return of the plague
The first videos released from the Siberian city of Shelekhov show people in white protective suits walking around the city, while reports have emerged of the city’s hospital being quarantined and a shortage of some antibiotics in pharmacies.
Reports from Russia indicate that a 28-year-old employee of a specialized institution for combating the plague has died after contracting a severe lung disease; after his death, the hospital where he was admitted was placed under quarantine measures and about 200 people who came into contact with him are under medical care and monitoring.
Some Russian media outlets have suggested that the person may have been exposed to the pathogen while working in a laboratory after breaking a tube containing contaminated material. However, the exact cause of the infection has not yet been officially confirmed.
The exact details of the cause of this situation and its possible extent are still being investigated, and existing reports of the return of the plague require official confirmation.
Plague is a bacterial infectious disease formerly known as the “Black Death”; the pulmonary form can be transmitted through respiratory droplets and can lead to severe and fatal illness if left untreated.
