The Swiss Foreign Ministry has announced that the official signing ceremony of the memorandum of understanding between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran will be held on Friday, June 19, at the seaside resort of Burgenstock near Lake Lucerne. The meeting aims to launch a new phase of negotiations after years of tension between the two countries.
The ministry’s statement said that the choice of venue was made for security reasons and limited access, and that this location was suggested by mediators including Pakistan and Qatar.
Diplomatic sources have announced that delegations from both countries, headed by US Vice President Jeddah Vance and Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, will attend the ceremony.
According to a report by Bloomberg News, the draft of the memorandum includes an immediate cessation of hostilities on all fronts, a commitment to non-hostile action, and the beginning of a 60-day process to reach a final agreement.
According to this draft, some of the provisions include the lifting of maritime restrictions against Iran, facilitating the export of oil and banking services, the release of frozen assets, and the beginning of the process of easing sanctions if the parties implement their commitments.
Another part of the text also emphasizes the continuation of negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program, how it manages enriched materials, and Iran’s commitment not to build nuclear weapons.
If finalized, this document must also be approved in the form of a binding resolution by the UN Security Council.
