According to Al Jazeera, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said in late August that Iran and Oman had agreed that the entry and exit of the new route through the Strait of Hormuz would take place through Iranian territorial waters.
This temporary transit route will be about 7 miles (11.3 kilometers) wide. However, important details, including the exact coordinates of the route, when safe use by ships will begin, and how revenue will be generated from this route, have not yet been clarified.
It is also unclear what operational protocols are in place for using this route and whether certain ships or ships with certain flags will be prohibited from passing.
Gharibabadi has said that despite this agreement, the Strait of Hormuz will not be reopened and has called on the United States to fulfill its commitments from the June peace agreement, including easing sanctions and releasing frozen Iranian assets.
