A Ukrainian defense company has claimed that two years ago, for the first time in the world, fully autonomous drones equipped with artificial intelligence managed to identify and target Russian soldiers without human guidance or supervision.
According to this claim, 10 drones called “Terminators” independently searched for live targets after losing contact with their operators and destroyed them during a military test.
The company said the event was the first recorded instance of the operational use of fully autonomous lethal drones on the battlefield.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian law and some international protocols prohibit the use of artificial intelligence in the final decision-making stage to shoot and kill humans, and the United Nations has previously called for restrictions on the development of such technologies.
Experts believe that the spread of this technology could pose serious legal, ethical, and security challenges in future wars.
