Concerns over Afghan border threats, regional security talks in Astana

Senior regional security officials focused on potential threats posed by the situation in Afghanistan and the security of the country’s northern borders at a recent meeting in Astana.

The talks were held between the Secretary-General of the Collective Security Treaty Organization, Imangali Tasmagambetov, and the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

The meeting discussed concerns about the security of Afghanistan’s northern borders, especially along the border with Tajikistan, and assessed progress in strengthening joint cooperation to ensure border security.

It has been said that in the coming months, more meetings will be held at the level of foreign and defense ministers of the organization’s member countries to take more coordinated measures.

After the Islamic Emirate returned to power in 2021, Central Asian countries have always expressed concern about the possibility of spreading insecurity and the activities of extremist groups in border areas.

Islamic Emirate officials have repeatedly emphasized that Afghan soil will not be used against any country, but regional countries remain concerned about medium-term threats to the stability of their borders.

Countries in the region are now trying to prevent the spread of potential threats by taking additional measures.
