UNAMA calls for immediate end to Afghanistan-Pakistan clashes, warns of escalating humanitarian crisis

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) issued an official statement on Tuesday, calling on Afghan and Pakistani security forces to immediately cease hostilities and prioritize the protection of civilians in accordance with international law and humanitarian law.

UNAMA warned that the continued fighting is severely exacerbating the dire humanitarian situation in the country and has seriously disrupted access for aid agencies.

According to UNAMA documents, from the evening of February 26 to March 2, 2026, at least 146 civilians were killed and injured across the country, including 42 killed and 104 injured, especially women and children. These casualties were caused by border clashes along the hypothetical Durand Line and airstrikes in provinces such as Paktika and Nangarhar.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) also reported that about 16,400 families have been displaced in five provinces, and that restrictions caused by the war have disrupted the delivery of aid and left Afghan returnees from Pakistan in an even more vulnerable situation.

UNAMA stressed that an immediate cessation of hostilities and unhindered access for aid agencies are essential to prevent further harm to civilians.
