While the results of the Iraqi parliamentary elections in November 2025 were contrary to Washington’s expectations, Iraqi sources told the Al-Arabiya Al-Jadeed website that the United States is preparing its most extensive sanctions package against Baghdad.
Three Iraqi government and political sources, who did not wish to be named, told this media outlet: American officials, in their recent visits to Iraq over the past five days, have explicitly announced that new sanctions will be imposed on Iraqi individuals and entities accused of “money laundering and financing activities related to Iran or its allies in the region.”
Another Iraqi source added: “This sanctions package will likely be the most extensive in recent years and will be announced gradually to avoid causing political or economic shock.”
