Russian President Vladimir Putin, during a visit to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, witnessed the Russian Pacific Fleet’s exercises from the deck of the Varyag missile cruiser and warned against increasing military capabilities in the region.
Putin said that for the first time, Japan has included Russia among the main threats in its doctrinal documents; but he emphasized that Moscow is not a threat to Japan and has no claims against Tokyo.
He also said that Russia is ready to cooperate and will respond with force if there is any attempt to seize its commercial ships.
