Assassination of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi in southern Zintan, Libya: From death sentence to presidential candidacy

On Tuesday night (3th of February ), news sources reported the assassination of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the second son of the late Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, south of the city of Zintan in the west of the country.

According to a source close to the Gaddafi family, Saif al-Islam was wounded and then killed by four gunmen in the garden of his home, according to Al-Arabiya TV. The perpetrators quickly fled the scene after the attack.

The 444th Battalion, affiliated with the Libyan National Unity Government, denied any connection to the assassination and stated that it had not been involved in the clashes in the city of Zintan.

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi (born 1972) studied business management engineering and a doctorate in economics from the University of London and was known as an influential figure in his father’s regime. After the fall of Gaddafi in 2011, he was arrested, sentenced to death in absentia, which was later overturned, and released in 2017.

He ran for the Libyan presidential election in 2021, but the election was not held due to political differences; Saif al-Islam lived in the city of Zintan until the assassination.
