The United Nations warned yesterday that there is no safe zone in the southern Gaza Strip and that areas designated by Israel as “safe zones” for Palestinians are in fact “places of death.”
At a conference in Geneva, UNICEF spokesman James Elder described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as “catastrophic” and said, “The idea of a safe zone in southern Gaza is ridiculous.”
He added: “Bombs are falling from the sky in a terrifying manner, schools designated as temporary shelters are regularly reduced to rubble, and tents are set on fire in airstrikes.”
Al-Dur stressed that Palestinians who have been ordered to evacuate Gaza City have no safe havens, and the ongoing bombardments have endangered the lives of civilians, especially children.
The warning comes as Israel recently completed control of the Netzarim Corridor, pushing hundreds of thousands of people south.
