EU appoints Gilles Bertrand as new special envoy for Afghanistan
The European Union has appointed French diplomat Gilles Brettran as its new special envoy for Afghanistan.
The European Union office in the country announced that the role of this envoy in strengthening engagement with Afghans and international partners will be very important at this critical time for the country.
Born in Marseille, France, Bertrand has more than 20 years of experience in the political and diplomatic structures of the European Union.
His last position was the European Union Embassy in Colombia from 2021.
He previously served as the head of the political department of the European Union delegation in Kabul from 2003 to 2004 and is familiar with Afghanistan’s political and security challenges.
Bertrand replaces Lithuanian diplomat Tomas Niklasson.
