$14 billion worth of contracts signed to rebuild Syria’s infrastructure
On Wednesday (6th of August), the Syrian government signed 12 investment contracts worth a total of $14 billion with international companies in a ceremony attended by the country’s interim president, Ahmed Sharia.
The contracts, which are aimed at rebuilding the country’s devastated infrastructure after 14 years of civil war, include key projects in the fields of transport infrastructure and real estate.
According to the official Syrian news agency, one of the most important of these agreements is a $4 billion contract with a Qatari company to build and develop Damascus International Airport.
This project will provide the airport with an annual capacity of 31 million passengers.
Another $2 billion contract was also signed with the United Arab Emirates National Investment Company to build the Damascus metro system, which is expected to be used by 750,000 people daily.
Other notable projects include a $2 billion contract with an Italian company to build 60 residential towers with 20,000 units in the suburbs of Damascus.
