Qatar: Doha’s mediation in Afghanistan is a successful example of diplomacy
Sheikha Aliya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, has cited her country’s diplomatic role in Afghanistan as a successful example of mediation at the UN General Assembly.
He said that Qatar’s efforts to facilitate negotiations led to the signing of a peace agreement between the United States and the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan on February 29, 2020 in Doha.
According to him, Qatar has since continued to provide humanitarian, developmental, and political assistance to Afghanistan and remains active in processes related to the country.
The Qatari representative also referred to hosting the UN-led “Doha Process” meetings on Afghanistan, describing it as part of international efforts to address the country’s challenges.
He added that Qatar hosted meetings related to counter-narcotics and the Afghan private sector last year and continued its role.
