The Wall Street Journal reported, citing American and Arab officials, that Washington has increased pressure on Oman in recent weeks, urging the country to sever diplomatic ties with Iran.
According to the report, the Trump administration has viewed Oman’s neutral approach towards Iran with skepticism and has threatened to impose sanctions and even military action; although a US official has said that there are no practical plans to attack Oman.
The Wall Street Journal added that Oman has long played the role of mediator between Iran and the United States and considers maintaining communication channels with Tehran essential to reducing tensions and achieving diplomatic solutions.
These developments are occurring while Oman has been the host and mediator of several rounds of indirect talks between Iran and the United States in recent months.
