Sakura Jima volcano erupts in Kyushu, Japan
Sakura Jima volcano on the island of Kyushu in southern Japan has experienced a violent eruption, which officials say is the strongest eruption since the volcano began its recent activity on June 22, 2025.
This volcanic activity, which has resumed after seven years of silence, has been accompanied by the ejection of huge masses of ash up to a height of 4,400 meters.
Eyewitnesses have reported on social media that sounds similar to thunder and strange underground noises were heard from the area.
Images posted by local residents show columns of smoke and ash covering the sky over the nearby city of Kagoshima.
The Japan Meteorological Agency has raised the volcano alert level to Level 3 and urged people to avoid areas around the volcano as lava and volcanic material could be thrown up to two kilometers away.
Security and rescue forces are on alert, and roads leading to the area have been blocked to protect the lives of residents and tourists.
