North Korea displays intercontinental ballistic missile capable of reaching US
North Korean state media reported on Tuesday that leader Kim Jong Un visited the Defense Industry Museum, where the Hwasong-20 intercontinental ballistic missile, capable of reaching the US mainland, is on display.
The report came a day after US President Donald Trump said he might meet Kim Jong Un during his planned trip to Asia. Trump is expected to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in China in November.
North Korea’s state news agency KCNA announced that Kim attended the opening ceremony of the “Defense Revolution Museum” on Sunday with his wife and daughter. The released images show a collection of weapons produced during his leadership, from drones to Hwasong-20 missiles.
According to Shin Jong-woo, secretary-general of the South Korean Defense and Security Council, the display in front of the missile launcher appeared to show a design with multiple warheads; a map was also displayed showing the missile’s alleged range beyond the US mainland and into parts of the Middle East, Australia and South America.
In a separate event, North Korea announced that it had tested a tactical ballistic missile on Monday, KCNA reported. The test was aimed at confirming a technical upgrade of one of the missile’s components, but no further details were provided.
