The US Congress has extended the mandate of the Afghanistan War Commission for another year to give the independent, bipartisan body more time to complete its review of the 20-year US war in Afghanistan.
According to this decision, the commission’s final report will be published in August 2027, while the report was previously scheduled to be presented in 2026.
The commission, which was created by the US Congress in December 2021, is tasked with examining decisions and events related to the Afghanistan war, including US policies and military operations before and during the two decades of war.
The commission said the extension of the mandate provides more time for the investigation to complete its investigations and present evidence-based findings and recommendations.
The US military intervention in Afghanistan began in October 2001 and ended with the withdrawal of US forces and its allies in August 2021, an event that led to the collapse of the republican system and the return of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan to power.
